A Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is someone who has lived experience with addiction, mental health challenges, or other life struggles and has been trained to provide support to others facing similar challenges. They use their personal recovery journey to inspire, guide, and empower others in recovery.
Key Roles of a Peer Support Specialist:

Offering encouragement and understanding through shared experiences.

Assisting individuals in accessing community services, treatment, and support groups.

Helping clients speak up for their needs and supporting them in their recovery goals.

Modeling recovery and resilience to encourage personal growth.

Leading or co-leading support groups, recovery meetings, or wellness activities.
Training & Certification
In Oregon, Peer Support Specialists must complete state-approved training and certification through the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). New Each Morning offers training and certification for Adult Addiction Recovery (for individuals with substance use disorder experience).

**Pre-work required
Approximately 2-3 hours pre-work must be completed and certificates emailed prior to start of training.
Why Peer Support Matters
Research shows that peer support improves recovery outcomes by reducing relapse rates, increasing engagement in treatment, and fostering a sense of belonging. Because peers have firsthand knowledge of the recovery process, they build strong, trusting relationships with those they support.

Cost includes 40 hours of certified training, PSS manual, opportunity for both PSS and CRM certification, continental breakfast, lunch, drinks, and snacks.
